HEATING
This is true for almost all reptiles kept in captivity in the UK. Although our climate supports many species of native reptiles, from adders to slowworms, the species most commonly kept as pets come from warmer climates, so extra heating is necessary. Unfortunately, it is not as simple as heating the vivarium with a radiator.
All reptiles are cold-blooded, so their environment does not control their body temperature. METHODS OF HEATING

A heat mat, a thin electrical device, can be placed under your vivarium. In some cases, it may also be used on the side of your vivarium. The heat mat should cover about a third of the floor area on the one side of your vivarium. A mat stat, a cheap piece of equipment that can control the temperature of the heat mat, is a thermostat suitable for heat deshedding vacuum mats. There are many brands of thermostats that are designed explicitly for reptile heating. The thermostat prevents heat buildup on the hot side.
Explicitly for Reptile
A spot bulb is another method of heating that can be attached to the living room ceiling. A Dimming Thermostat controls this. Ceramic Bulbs are also well-suited for reptiles that require extremely high temperatures. Some ceramic bulbs have power ratings of up to 250w.
Spot Bulbs
A dimming thermostat can control ceramic bulbs, but the Pulse Proportional Temperature Thermostat is a more affordable alternative. This is constantly turning on and off the bulb to maintain the desired temperature. A 50 gallon canister filter can be used with spot bulbs, but it will quickly burn the filament and require constant replacement. Ceramic Bulbs, on the other side, don’t have this problem. The bulb’s surface can heat up, so it is essential to keep your eyes on it!
